ADHD Statistics 2026: Tasks, Work, and Procrastination
Most ADHD statistics pages count diagnoses and stop there. This one covers the part people actually live with: unfinished tasks, lost work days, and procrastination. Every figure below names its source and the year the data was collected.
If you're citing something from this page, take the source and the year with it. Numbers in this field are collected in different decades, by different methods, and a prevalence figure from a parent survey is not the same kind of object as one from a clinical interview. Where a figure is old or self-reported, it says so.
How many people have ADHD?
Two things are worth flagging before anyone reuses these. First, both are counts of diagnosis, not of the underlying condition — undiagnosed people are invisible to them by definition, which is part of why the adult figure sits below the 2%–5% range that the CDC report cites for adult ADHD symptoms worldwide. Second, the adult figure is self-reported and was not validated against medical records; the authors say so themselves.

What ADHD costs at work
This is the least-cited part of the ADHD literature and the most useful for anyone writing about productivity. Two nationally representative studies, using the same broad method a few years apart, both found a substantial and statistically significant effect on work performance.
Do not report that $19.5 billion as a current figure. It was published in 2005, in the dollars and labour force of that time. It is a legitimate historical estimate and a legitimate thing to cite as such; it is not what ADHD costs the U.S. economy in 2026, and nobody has published a directly comparable update.
The 2005 study also broke the effect down by occupation, and the spread is larger than the headline suggests:

The share of workers affected is consistent across both studies: 4.2% of U.S. workers screened positive for adult ADHD in the 2005 sample, and an average of 3.5% across the 10 WHO countries in 2008 (inter-quartile range 1.3%–4.9%). The WHO study covered 7,075 employed respondents and found the impairment held regardless of occupation, education, age, gender, or partner status.
Is procrastination actually part of ADHD?
It's the question people ask most and the one where the evidence has only recently firmed up. A systematic review published in 2026 settled the association, if not the mechanism.
Eleven studies, 2,788 people, one consistent result. A PRISMA-2020 systematic review in Research in Developmental Disabilities (2026) found ADHD symptoms consistently and positively associated with procrastination across every included study. Inattention was the most robust correlate — not hyperactivity, not impulsivity.
The authors are explicit about the limit: the underlying evidence is mostly cross-sectional, so this is a firmly established association, not a demonstrated cause. Anyone citing it should carry that caveat along.
A separate preregistered study of 640 adults, also published in 2026, went after the mechanism with structural equation modelling. It found the link between inattention symptoms and procrastination was mediated by three specific things: sensitivity to delay, perceived low value of the task, and flexible goal adjustment.
That third one is the practically useful finding. If what drives the delay is partly that a task looks low-value and far away, then the intervention isn't more discipline — it's making the task smaller, nearer, and concrete enough to start. Which is exactly what the next section is about.
Why unfinished tasks won't leave your head
The oldest idea here is the Zeigarnik effect: unfinished tasks occupy more mental space than finished ones. Bluma Zeigarnik described it in the 1920s, and it has been repeated in productivity writing ever since — often with more confidence than the original evidence supports.
The better-powered modern finding is more specific, and more actionable:
You don't have to finish a task to stop it nagging at you. You have to plan it. Masicampo and Baumeister (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2011) showed across several studies that unfulfilled goals produced intrusive thoughts during an unrelated reading task, made goal-related words more mentally accessible, and degraded performance on an unrelated anagram task.
Letting participants write a specific plan for those unfinished goals eliminated those effects — without the task being done. The reduction was mediated by how earnest the plan was: the people who showed no more intrusions were the ones who went on to actually execute their plans.
Put the two together and you get the mechanism behind almost every ADHD task system that works. The open loop is what costs you, not the workload. All figures below are from the same CDC source — the NCHS Rapid Surveys System, collected October–November 2023 and published in MMWR 73(40):890–895. They describe U.S. adults with a current ADHD diagnosis.

The 71.5% figure is the one most worth quoting. Seven in ten adults taking stimulant medication for ADHD could not reliably get it filled — that is a supply problem sitting on top of a condition defined by difficulty with consistency and routine.
Short version, if you need something quotable
· About 1 in 16 U.S. adults has a current ADHD diagnosis, and roughly half of them found out as adults.
· Adult ADHD was associated with 35 days a year of lost work performance in a nationally representative U.S. study — with blue-collar workers losing more than four times what professionals did.
· The ADHD–procrastination link is now backed by a systematic review of 11 studies, and the strongest correlate is inattention, not hyperactivity.

How to read and cite these numbers
Four things to carry with any figure on this page:
1. Diagnosis is not prevalence. Every U.S. figure here counts people who have been diagnosed. People who have ADHD and don't know it aren't in the count.
2. Self-report has limits. The adult figures come from a survey panel and were not validated against medical records; response rates in online panels are low and can under-represent some groups. The CDC report states these limitations directly.
3. Old studies stay old. The 120-million-days and $19.5-billion figures are from 2005. They're citable as a 2005 estimate and misleading as anything else.
4. Cross-sectional means association, not cause. The procrastination review is clear that it cannot establish direction. ADHD symptoms and procrastination travel together; the evidence does not show one producing the other.

How many adults have ADHD?
In the United States, an estimated 6.0% of adults — about 15.5 million people, or one in 16 — had a current ADHD diagnosis, based on self-report collected in October–November 2023 by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics Rapid Surveys System. Roughly half of them received that diagnosis at age 18 or older.
How many children have ADHD?
An estimated 7 million U.S. children aged 3–17 years — 11.7% — had a current ADHD diagnosis according to 2024 data from the National Survey of Children's Health, a national survey of parents. Boys were diagnosed roughly twice as often as girls: 13% versus 7% in 2022–2023 data.
Is procrastination linked to ADHD?
Yes. A 2026 systematic review in Research in Developmental Disabilities pooled 11 quantitative studies covering 2,788 people and found ADHD symptoms consistently and positively associated with procrastination, with inattention the most robust correlate. The review notes that most of the underlying evidence is cross-sectional, so it establishes association rather than cause.
How much work time does adult ADHD cost?
A nationally representative U.S. study published in 2005 estimated 35.0 days of annual lost work performance per worker with ADHD, which scaled to roughly 120 million days across the U.S. labour force. A 10-country WHO World Mental Health study published in 2008 found a smaller but statistically significant effect: 22.1 excess days of lost role performance per year.
